GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

The ELD teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, developing and delivering a comprehensive English Language Development (ELD) program for grades 9-12.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree
• MA DESE ESL license 5-12
• Knowledge of second language acquisition 
• Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to use technology effectively

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s Degree or significant post-graduate coursework in ESL
• Experience teaching high school Multilingual Learners (MLs)
• Experience in administering the WIDA Screener and WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0
• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work with staff and community members
• Proficiency in a second language is preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):

• Prepare and deliver instructional lessons with clear and measurable objectives that meet Common Core, State and WIDA Frameworks to meet the individual needs of students.
• Provide culturally responsive and asset-based learning experiences for students from a wide range of socio-economic levels and cultural backgrounds.
• Use a wide variety of research-based second-language teaching techniques to ensure student learning.
• Design and demonstrate differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students.
• Implement accommodations and curricular modifications as specified in educational plans (IEPs) for dually identified students.
• Use a variety of formal and informal WIDA-aligned assessments to accurately measure student progress and to inform instruction.
• Set student growth goals based on assessment outcomes.
• Collaborate with colleagues on culturally proficient curriculum, lesson and assessment design.
• Co-plan and co-teach with content-area teacher(s).
• Participate actively in faculty, department, and PLC meetings.
• Set professional development goals, develop professional development plans, and participate in professional development activities that improve teaching practice.
• Plan and administer ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs testing.
• Work with administrators to prepare MCAS testing schedules and identify appropriate accommodations to meet the needs of all students.
• Maintain data on enrollment of the school’s ML and Former English Learner (FEL) population.
• Monitor FELs for four years, per DESE guidelines.
• Collaborate with other content area teachers to continue to support the academic growth and success of MLs and former MLs.
• Collaborate with the Guidance Department to decipher transcripts from abroad, to create schedules, to support college and career readiness and identify support mechanisms.
• Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
• Actively involve families in their children’s education.
• Use computers and other types of technology to support student learning in and out of the classroom.
• Collaborate with the ELD team and the IT team to ensure access to technology resources for all students and families.
• Follow safety procedures and written and verbal instructions.
• Consistent and on-time attendance is required or supervision and instruction of the students.
• Other duties as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day; however, there may be occasions for after-school meetings.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel.  The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
