GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

The English Teacher position is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing that are fundamental to effective communication and literate citizenship; that develops an appreciation of literature of all types; that motivates students to read widely for information and recreation; that develops standards for critical judgment of written and oral communications transmitted by mass media; and that discovers and develops special talents of students in the field of English to prepare each student for the future. 

QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • MA DESE English license 5-8
  • Knowledge of second-language acquisition 
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use technology effectively

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s Degree or significant post-graduate coursework in English or Literature


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):

  

  • Teaches content and skills in English language, literature, composition, utilizing curriculum designated by the District. 
  • Prepares and adapts English material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students. 
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the MA frameworks and district curricula; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students. 
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary. 
  • Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas.  
  • Evaluates each student’s progress in meeting the course standards for English skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. 
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and attitude problems. 
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress. 
  • Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities. 
  • Administers testing in accordance with school and state testing practices. 
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students;
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day; however, there may be occasions for after-school meetings.


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel.  The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.
