GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

Supervise and manage the school library/media center. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that the library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school. 

QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in education, preferably in Library Education 
  • Appropriate DESE library teaching license or ability to obtain library license
  • Strong general library skills
  • Skilled at utilizing a variety of technology platforms
  • Knowledge of Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards
  • Ability to work with students at all skill levels
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):


Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Discover, maintain, and promote appropriate digital resources for students and teachers, supporting teachers and students with appropriate technology for research, information power, and hands-on learning;
  • Consult teachers on the appropriate use of materials and help them schedule materials for classroom instruction.
  • Teach library and digital literacy classes to all students.
  • Consult with reading teachers, District ELA Coordinator, and classroom teachers as needed to develop opportunities to integrate literacy goals into library lessons.
  • Consult with Instructional Technology Specialists as needed to teach Digital Literacy and Computer Science Standards in lessons. 
  • Serve as an information resource for users of library/media center materials and provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of district learning resources. 
  • Effectively plan school library programs to meet identified needs. 
  • Assist in the preparation of bibliographies and curriculum resources. 
  • Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources. 
  • Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students. 
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage the school community and parent involvement. 
  • Carry out student behavior management in alignment with school and district approaches. 
  • Interact with students to promote positive attitudes toward the school library. 
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents related to the library and media services for the school. 
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the library/media center program and make changes based on the findings. 
  • Communicate positively and effectively with colleagues, students, and parents. 
  • Collaborate with librarians from other District schools to maintain aligned programs. 
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for supervision and instruction of the students.
  • Other duties as needed.

Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day. 


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the library teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel.  The library teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds.  Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. Vision and hearing correctable to within normal ranges.
