GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

The Elementary Art Teacher is responsible for teaching art education to students in all elementary school grades Pk-3 (Split equally this year between Finn and Woodward Schools) and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of art through a variety of mediums. Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of art through a variety of planned art experiences and performs other duties directly related to this job description.

  • Minimum BA in Art or Art Education 
  • Ability to work with students at all skill levels 
  • Strong general art skills
  • Appropriate DESE teaching license
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use technology effectively

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):


Duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Building a classroom culture in which students love art
  • Teaches Elementary Art and supports schoolwide instructional focus according to Massachusetts Curriculum Standard
  • Engaging students in the creative process and cultivating their talents, while deepening their knowledge and understanding of art, design, and art history;
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals, and establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Uses a variety of instruction strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, discovery, etc
  • Follows a Responsive Classroom with a code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established administrative policies and develops rules of classroom behavior that are enforced in a fair and just manner
  • Evaluate students’ academic and social growth; Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program
  • Establishes a culture where diverse student voices are valued
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students
  • Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service Professional Development activities
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in fulfilling teacher evaluation procedures
  • Supervises students in hallways, recess areas, and lunchroom during the school day
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with the state testing program
  • Attend established traditional school-sponsored activities (e.g., Open House).
  • Consistent and on-time attendance is required for the supervision and instruction of the students
  • Other duties as needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Work Environment:  

Work is generally performed in a school environment during the school day, however, there may be occasions for after-school meetings/performances. 


Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear.  The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch, and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.  Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building. Vision and hearing are correctable to within normal ranges.
