GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):

The High School Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the Principal with leadership, direction, supervision, operations, and accountability at the high school. As part of a team that includes two fellow assistant principals, the successful candidate will work with the principal to support the students and staff of the school in meeting its educational goals. 

QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s Degree or higher in education administration, special education or related field
  • Massachusetts DESE licensure as a high school teacher required; eligible for license as a high school principal 
  • Five or more years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the high school level required, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience, school-level involvement and/or system wide professional activities, and the interview process
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Solid technological skills; knowledge of master scheduling is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment
  • Solid examples of collaboration in leading teams

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  •   Experience in school administration or related field desired, but not required 
  •   Experience providing professional development



ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):


  • Coordinate the instructional affairs within assigned departments, and externally, where pertinent. 
  • Collaborate with the Principal to supervise and evaluate teachers, supervisors and nonprofessional staff as assigned.
  • Direct the activities of the staff and students and ensure a safe, orderly, and smooth functioning environment conducive to learning. 
  • Assist in the development and administration of the annual master schedule, working in conjunction with the principal and district department leaders. 
  • Direct and control student behavior and discipline, counseling students regarding acceptable school conduct and recommending appropriate action to be taken when necessary. 
  • Provide leadership in screening and interviewing applicants including substitutes, and/or recommending of applicants to be interviewed.
  • Assist the Principal with the development and management of the annual budget. 
  • Collaborate with the educators to maintain the safety and security of the school. 
  • Serve on various committees to represent the high school at the direction of the Principal. 
  • Implement student achievement improvement efforts including directing the student achievement plan, developing testing schedules, establishing and overseeing the processes related to assessment and reporting student progress, data collection, students’ records, and child accounting in accordance with district, state, and national standards. 
  • Collaborate with the district wide administration team regarding new or changing instructional methods, materials, strategies, and programs. 
  • Analyze systems and structures, look for efficiencies, and refine school-wide processes as necessary.
  • Assist, determine, develop and implement plans for staff development for the building that facilitates professional growth and enhances the quality and efficiency of teaching. 
  • Supervise MCAS testing, including test coordination, data dissemination, and tracking of students’ progress toward earning competency determination.
  • Participate in the district-wide leadership team. 
  • Assist in all elements of graduation.
  • Manage communications with the parent community regarding school functions, processes, and procedures. Promptly respond to all parent questions and concerns.
  • Represent school at select meetings and help lead work related to evaluation.
  • Facilitate task assignment within the main office staff. Assign tasks to various administrative assistants, support their completion of tasks, and assess/re-allocate as necessary.
  • Assist in the completion and submission of all required reports, forms, and data requests on time to the designated sources. 
  • Work/meet with other administrators and staff to foster and participate in team collaboration and effectiveness. 
  • Collaborate with the Administrative Team to coordinate personnel selection processes for secondary level interviews. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the High School Principal.
  • Participate in and facilitate school safety/crisis team
  • Other duties as needed or as assigned by high school principal

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


Work Environment:  

  • Work is performed in both office and school environments, afternoon and night meetings are required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel between multiple school/building locations
  • Ability to operate computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine and other standard office equipment
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building
